The Most Underrated Skill in Industrial Maintenance: Knowing When Not to DIY
I've been coordinating emergency repairs for over a decade. In that time, I've learned that the most dangerous sentence in industrial maintenance is "I think I can handle this myself."
That might sound like a strange thing for a specialist to say, but let me explain. The technicians I trust most in a crisis aren't the ones who claim they can fix everything. They're the ones who say, "This part is within my scope; that part is Rice Lake's territory—here's where we need them." Knowing your boundary isn't weakness. It's how you avoid turning a two-hour fix into a two-day disaster.
The Day a Multimeter Almost Made Things Worse
In November 2024, I was at a food processing plant where a batching scale had stopped reading accurately. The line was down, and the plant manager—understandably—wanted it running again before the next shift. I started doing what too many people do in that situation: I pulled out a multimeter and started poking around the load cell wiring.
Here's the thing. Knowing how to use a multimeter to test voltage is table stakes. I can do that in my sleep. But checking a load cell isn't just about seeing if 10 V DC is on the excitation wires. You need the correct wire identification—the load cell color code. Different manufacturers use different codes. Rice Lake has its own, and if you guess, you can damage the indicator or get readings that look fine but are garbage. (Surprise, surprise: I guessed wrong, and the readings were garbage.)
We ended up calling the plant's regular instrument tech, who had the Rice Lake load cell color code sheet taped to the inside of his toolbox. He had us verify the signal wires with the multimeter in under ten minutes. My initial instinct—just poke at it and figure it out—cost us an hour.
Tools Are Not Interchangeable
Another lesson that stuck with me came from comparing two voltage testers side by side. During that same month, one of our electricians showed me why he swears by his 1AC II non-contact voltage tester for initial safety checks. It's fast, it's simple, and it tells you if a conductor is live without touching it. But it won't tell you if the voltage is 120 V or 480 V, and that distinction matters when you're connecting a Rice Lake indicator to a control panel.
OSHA's electrical safety standard (29 CFR 1910.333) is pretty clear about verifying the absence of voltage before working on live parts. That's why I always grab a 1AC II non-contact voltage tester before I get near a panel. But it's only one layer. You don't argue about which tool is better; you use the non-contact tester to isolate the danger, then the multimeter to measure the actual value. When I see someone trying to make one tool do everything—like using a multimeter as a makeshift continuity checker for a load cell without checking the manufacturer's wiring diagram—I start asking questions.
Precision measurement is a whole different language. I won't pretend to know how to read a Starrett micrometer from memory; I can, but only because I learned it from a machinist who taught me that the micrometer's friction thimble is a feature, not a decoration. Even then, for critical dimensions, I still verify with the plant's QA department. Each tool has its purpose, and each trade has its specialty.
The Hardest Call: Asking the Manufacturer
There was a rush order last March. A client needed a replacement component for their Rice Lake weighing system—part number 182591—and the normal lead time was a week. They needed it in three days. We managed to source it through a distributor and paid express freight. But here's the part I'm proud of: when the technician saw the installation instructions, he stopped and said, "I can mount it, but it needs a licensed calibration before we restart."
That decision triggered a debate. The plant manager asked if we could just "zero it out" and run. The risk was clear. If the scale was off by even 0.5%, the batches would be off, and the customer could reject an entire truckload. We calculated the worst case: a $50,000 product recall plus downtime. The upside of skipping calibration: saving six hours. Six hours wasn't worth fifty grand.
The technician made the call to wait for the Rice Lake-certified technician to do the calibration. That was the right call. And it's the same reason why I'll happily wire load cells, connect indicators, and check voltage all day long—but I will not guess at a color code or a calibration constant.
What If You Could Fix Everything?
I know some people will read this and think, "A good tech should be able to handle this." Here's the thing: I'm not saying we shouldn't be resourceful. I'm saying that resourcefulness includes knowing when to call in the people who designed the system.
Look, I've seen what happens when an experienced person overestimates their ability. In February 2023, a colleague of mine decided to "fix" a load cell wiring issue on a rental scale without checking the diagram. He burned up the signal conditioner. The rental company had to ship a replacement overnight, and we ate $700 in rush freight plus the cost of the dead conditioner. We paid $700 because we tried to save twenty minutes.
That's when our company implemented what we call the "20-Minute Rule:" if you can't find the correct documentation within 20 minutes, you stop and ask somebody who knows. It doesn't mean you give up. It doesn't mean you're unqualified. It means you're professional enough to recognize the boundary.
Stick With What You're Great At
I've learned more from the moments I said "I don't do this one" than from all the times I pretended I knew. The vendor who told me, "This isn't our strength—here's who does it better," earned all of our future work. The specialist who admits their limits is the one I trust with the jobs I can't afford to get wrong.
So, use your multimeter. Keep a 1AC II nearby for safety. Learn how to read a Starrett micrometer like it's second nature. And when you're facing a Rice Lake weighing system that's acting up, get the color code, check the part number, and take the time to verify your work. That's not a limitation. That's professionalism.
