I Bought the Cheap Floor Scale First. The 13-lb Mistake Cost More Than the Upgrade
At 7:40 on a Tuesday in July 2022, Dale from shipping stood in the bay door with his arms crossed. “Your scale says 510,” he said. “The terminal says 523.” The truck driver was already annoyed. The receiver was waiting. I was the one who’d bought that scale three weeks earlier because it was the cheapest one I could find.
Thirteen pounds doesn’t sound like much. The 13-pound argument
The first sign of trouble wasn’t 13 pounds. It was the indicator slowly drifting two or three pounds when the afternoon sun hit the loading dock. I blamed heat, dust, concrete. I did not blame my decision to save $1,100.
The morning of the argument, a pallet left on a truck. The freight terminal’s legal-for-trade scale said 523 lbs. My scale said 510.
