How to Read a Rice Lake Weighing Systems Calibration Sheet (Without a Metrology Degree)
The first time I opened a Rice Lake weighing systems calibration sheet, I closed it after about 30 seconds. Not because it was badly done. Because I had no idea what I was looking at.

Most calibration sheets have the same bones: equipment ID, date, standards used, environmental conditions, and a set of readings. The two columns that matter most are as found and as left. As found is how the equipment was performing before any adjustment. As left is how it performed after calibration. The difference between them tells you whether the unit was drifting out of spec before it reached you.
Say a Rice Lake load cell shows an as-found reading outside tolerance but an as-left reading inside tolerance. On the surface, that looks fine — it passed at the end. But for a new unit, that's a warning sign. It means the manufacturer had to correct something. If I'm buying new equipment, I want it to arrive in spec, not after a corrective action.
Don't hold me to the exact NIST wording, but traceability is the other piece. Every measurement on that sheet should lead back to a reference standard. If the certificate doesn't list a standard, a certificate number, or a calibration date for the test equipment itself, you're looking at a piece of paper with numbers on it.

So here's the thing people miss: a calibration sheet is not a verdict. It's a conversation. It tells you whether your supplier actually tested the device, how good their test equipment is, and how much they trust their own work.
To be fair, these documents aren't written for plant managers or purchasing admins. They're written for auditors. That's why they're dense. But if nobody on your side reads them, you're paying for a compliance exercise that doesn't protect anyone.
I found this out the hard way. In 2022, a batch of load cells arrived with as-found readings close to the tolerance limit. I almost filed the certificates and moved on. Instead, I compared serial numbers to the incoming inspection report. Two units had been "adjusted" — meaning they didn't arrive in spec. We sent them back. No big drama. But if I hadn't looked, we would have installed a known drift risk in a process that runs around the clock.
That's the cost. It's not the $1,200 part. It's the downtime, the blamed coworker, and the argument with finance about whether we really need to pay for another calibration. I went back and forth for two days over whether to reject those load cells. The supplier said, "But they passed as-left." My gut said, "But they were out of spec when they got here." I asked for replacements. Making that call helped me sleep better.
What ignoring it will cost you
The direct cost of ignoring a calibration sheet is easy to estimate: you lose traceability. The indirect cost is harder to see. A vague certificate creates a paper trail that looks complete but is actually hollow.
Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov), accuracy claims have to be substantiated. I think about that when I read any instrument certificate. A calibration sheet is the substantiation. If it's vague, the claim is vague, and you're buying on trust alone.
There's also a smaller, human cost. When I was starting out, I spent hours chasing down calibration questions from a vendor who didn't want to answer them. That time adds up. Now, I ask for a sample calibration certificate before placing an order. If a supplier treats that like a weird question, that tells me how the rest of the engagement will go.
It's not just Rice Lake load cells
The same instinct applies to every instrument with a spec. When people ask me what is a FLIR thermal camera, I say it's a tool that lets you see heat differences. But the usefulness depends on the same kind of verification. We've bought a $10 multimeter for basic continuity checks and a $3,000 thermal camera for motor inspections. - I ask for a sample calibration document before we buy. If the seller doesn't provide one, I don't push back hard — I just buy from someone else.
That last point matters more than you'd think. My experience is based on about 250 purchase orders across eight vendors, mostly mid-sized test equipment suppliers. If you're running a metrology lab, your requirements are tighter. But even for small orders, good suppliers don't make you feel like a nuisance when you ask. Turns out the good ones would rather answer questions upfront than deal with returns later.

Trust me on this one: the calibration sheet is not the boring part of buying test equipment. It's the part that tells you whether the equipment was ever tested at all. Seriously. Treat it that way.
